Wild divine’s Biofeedback Program Offers Huge Relief To Patients Article II by Jen Matlack
The orthopedics department at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio handles an assortment of medical condition’s, everything from knee and hip replacements to serious bone injuries. One year ago, a woman in her mid-40s was admitted to the hospital as a result of a traumatic injury: both of her ankles had been broken in a serious accident. To reduce her discomfort, the hospital staff immediately administered morphine PCA (patient controlled analgesia).
“Nothing really happened, though,” explains Miriah Boocher, MS, APRN, BC, ONC, an orthopedic and family nurse practitioner at Good Samaritan. “The patient continued to be in agonizing pain.”
As a result, the woman requested that the staff increase her medication, but because she already had been given the maximum dosage, there was nothing more the nurses could do; any more may have posed a risk to her health. Naturally, she became frustrated with the staff and at times she was verbally abusive.
“She was hurting and she felt like we weren’t doing enough to help her,” says Boocher.
It was then that Boocher presented Wild Divine’s Healing Rhythms biofeedback program, a computer software program that teaches people how to relax, breathe deeply, and meditate through a series of 15 interactive steps.
She explained to the patient how Healing Rhythms works essentially the user inserts three biofeedback fingers into sensors that measure heart rate variability and skin conductance, two very important measures of physical and mental stress. The program, which features soothing music and beautiful images, then introduces relaxation, meditative and breathing exercises lead by leaders in the field of health and wellness including, Andrew Weil, MD, Deepak Chopra, MD, and Dean Ornish, MD as your expert guides. Each exercise teaches the user to recognize their heart beat as well as tension in their muscles. The goal of the program is to put the user in a deep state of relaxation to improve whole body wellness. Only when the user has learned to achieve this new state of relaxation does the program advance to the next level.
“By helping patients focus on breathing and relaxation, Healing Rhythms distracts patients from their pain,” explains Michelle Zendah, Communications Manager at Good Samaritan Hospital.
“The patient stayed up all night playing with it,” says Boocher. During that time, pain that she had been feeling gradually decreased. By the morning, pain levels were cut in half. Boocher admits that when the orthopedics department first received the Healing Rhythms program, she was skeptical about it. “I wasn’t sure what to expect,” she says. Then she tried it herself and immediately felt calm and relaxed.
“Now,” says Boocher, “I’m a believer. When traditional pain remedies don’t work for patients, we turn to Healing Rhythms.”

The Art of Divine Meditation $8.25 “I suppose that it is profitable, rather than bold, for me to endeavor to teach the art of meditation. It is as heavenly a business as any that belongs to either men or Christians. And it is such a heavenly business as does unspeakably benefit the soul. For it is by meditation that we ransack our deep and false hearts, find out our secret enemies, come to grips with them, expel them, and arm ourselves against their re-entrance. By meditation we make use of all good means, fit ourselves for all good duties. By meditation we see our weaknesses, obtain redress, prevent temptations, cheer up our loneliness, temper our occasions of delight, get more light unto our knowledge, add more heat to our affections, put more life into our devotions. It is only by meditation that we are able to be strangers upon the earth (as we are commanded to be), and by this we are brought to a right estimation of all earthly things, finally into a sweet enjoyment of invisible comforts. It is by meditation that we see our Saviour, as Stephen did; we talk with God, as Moses did; we are ravished into Paradise, with blessed Paul, seeing that Heaven that we shall be so loath to leave, which things we cannot utter. Meditation alone is the remedy for security and worldliness. It is the pastime of saints, the ladder to Heaven; in short, it is the best way to improve Christianity. Learn it, if you can. Neglect it if you so desire, but he who does so shall never find joy neither in God, nor in himself. And though some of old have appropriated this duty to themselves (confining it within their cells, professing nothing but contemplation), claiming their immunity from those cares which accompany an active life, might have thebest leisure for meditation, yet I deem it an envious wrong to conceal meditation from many, for its benefit may be universal. There is no man who is so taken up with action that he does not at some time have a free mind. And no reasonable mind is so simple as not to be able to better itself by secret thoughts. Those who have but little stock need best to know the rules of thrift. Surely divine meditation is nothing else but a bending of the mind upon some spiritual object, through different forms of discourse, until our thoughts come to an issue. And this must either be unpremeditated, occasioned by outward occurrences offered to the mind; or else it must be deliberate, wrought out of our own heart. And if it is deliberate, then it is either in matter of knowledge (for finding out some hidden truth, or overcoming some heresy by profound traversing of reason); or it is in matter of affection. Joseph Hall (July 1, 1574 – September 8, 1656), English bishop and satirist, was born at Bristow park, near Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, on the 1st of July 1574. Joseph Hall received his early education at the local school, and was sent (1589) to Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Hall was chosen for two years in succession to read the public lecture on rhetoric in the school |

Meditation, Confession and Healing in Writing Testimonies $14.99 “MEDITATION, CONFESSION AND HEALING IN WRITING TESTIMONIES This book is about the role of Bible meditation, confession and resolution through writing testimonies, which is a personal reflection on the word of God. This is a vital part of spiritual discipline that can lead to spiritual formation and development and yield great benefits in a Christian’s spiritual growth including the healing of the whole person. “Dr. Samuel D. Lee’s insightful book explains the inductive method of Bible study and the importance of meditation and confession. He explains very well the value of testimony writing. Meditation is prayerfully thinking about (and sometimes writing about) the contents of the Bible passage. Confession is not only confession of sin; it is also confession of faith and confession of praise and thanksgiving to God. He emphasizes the importance of writing and sharing in building up one’s own faith and the faith of others. I believe that this book can be very helpful to the person who seeks to make his personal Bible study more meaningful.” – Sarah Barry, Co-founder of University Bible Fellowship “I believe that Dr. Samuel D. Lee has without doubt written in lucid style the essentials of Christian disciplines of meditation in writing. This book is a must for all who desire to grow in their spiritual development in personal meditation.” – Dr. David P. Lavigne, General Superintendent, The Evangelical Christian Church in Canada “Unquestionably this book is a significant contribution to the Christian church in postmodern time presenting an effective and persuasive way of spiritual formation and influential discipleship, shown in the case illustration of the practice.” – Augustine Suh, Ph.D., Professor in Systematic Theology, Midwest University Samuel D. Lee, Ph.D., Bethany Divinity College & Seminary, is a missionary, Bible teacher and Biblical counsellor in Canada and an ordained pastor.” |
